Changing DNS

Any time you make a DNS (domain name server) change it takes around 24-48 hours to complete. During this propagation time routers all over the world are updating their cache. This causes your site to be up and down randomly during the first 48 hours for different people at different times. Think of DNS like a zip code. If you don't put a zip code on your mail the post office doesn't know where to send it. Domains are the same way if they don't have the DNS the internet doesn't know what server to send your request to.

Making The Changes

Every registar has a different procedure for changing your domains DNS, however they are all done basically the same way. The welcome email you received from us provides you with the name servers you need to use. They should look something like:
      ns1.serve-o-matic.net
      ns2.serve-o-matic.net
Don't use these unless they match the instructions you were given. You will then fill in the name servers at the place where you bought your domain.

Here's specific instructions for a few registries:

YahooDomains: Contact YahooDomains at 408-349-7770 to get your Login and Registry Key so you can log into MelbourneIT.com.au (see below) to make your actual changes.

MelbourneIT.com.au: Click on Make Changes and enter your domain name (without the www.) and your registry key. Remember the key is case sensitive. After logging in, scroll down. Go to Delegation Details to make your DNS changes. Don't be misled by the titles here; Name Server Functions is NOT the one you want. When you get to the Delegation page, scroll down to the existing Primary and Secondary name servers for the domain. Replace these with the name servers from the Welcome Email. Delete any extra name servers after the first two. Now scroll down, and save your changes. That's it!

AAAARRGGH!! Help me!

If you can't figure out how to change your sites DNS contact whomever or wherever you bought your domain name from. They will be able to assist you in making the changes or direct you to their faq on how it's done.
